Statement
My love for painting grows with each piece I complete and each work influences the next.My subject matter varies from the rural landscapes, especially the woods around me to portraits and more controlled paintings which tend to spring from a strong emotional response to something I consider unjust or a topic I want to explore and question.
My landscapes are always at least started pleinair and it is the spontaneous nature of this kind of painting which I find most exhilarating. I try to capture the surging energy around me using oils with a stripped down palette of primary colours often with a vibrant intense under colour which I let glow through to capture the light and life of the scene.
My studio paintings and portraits start with a lot of sketching, thinking and research, and if possible I will complete my portraits from life.
My studio paintings usually entail many sketches to test the composition and flow of the painting in order to achieve maximum impact. I have a story to tell and with imagery, composition and use of colour my aim is to achieve a dynamic painting which will elicit a strong emotional response to that story.
