The Day Diana Calls Checkmate

The Day Diana Calls Checkmate, Painting
The Day Diana Calls Checkmate
Part of my gatekeeping series, this painting on watercolour paper with Golden acrylics references greek mythology. Artemis, the goddess of the hunt was also known as Diana in Roman mythology. Their symbol is a she bear and appears in many paintings of the two. I envisage a modern day protagonist, confronting those who seek to exclude women and staging them as protectors of women and their rights. I depict the conflict between the protagonist and the gatekeepers as a game of chess, the ultimate battle of strategy. It feels like women are fighting a battle to win or retain hard fought for rights, and that a complex strategic plan is needed to overcome these obstructive powers.
