Cat Gemmill

Statement

Cat Gemmill is a freelance Artist working in Glasgow. Having previously studied Design for Textiles in Edinburgh, Cat then went onto gain her (BA)Honours from the School of Textiles in the Scottish Borders. With a background in Textile Design and a true love of colour - Cat’s work consists of large scale, expressive pieces using very deliberate, texture-like brush strokes and broad colour palettes. Having grown up close to nature and studied in amongst rolling hills, nature has become her main inspiration. Showing appreciation to the positivity we gain from being amidst nature is the purpose of her work. Acrylics are her medium of choice, enjoying the way quick brushstrokes allow gradual blending of the colours on the canvas to add more depth to each piece. Her work focuses on how colour can impact us and stir emotion. The subjects of the art range from wildlife, landscapes and florals - all relatable subjects - but seen through the Artists eyes, experimenting with colour to make something joyful. She is at the beginning of a new project, looking at more dream-like scenarios. Yet still with a strong interest of how colour impacts the viewer. Cat’s first year as an independent artist has seen her become the art provider for several local establishments. In this time, Cat has also curated her own solo exhibition for the launch of her collection titled ‘Happiness Blooms from Within’ in Glasgow. This work lead to invites to exhibit in London,Venice and Rome the same year.
