Faslane, Arrochar Alps
The charming township of Garelochead nestles in the foreground of the dramatic soaring Arrochar Alps, part of the volcanic Highland Fault line. The power of the Ice Age still evident in the soaring craggy peaks and the smoothed off slopes. Contrasted with the ragged mountain edge was the flat calm of the loch. Another feature lifts the scene into a new dimension, that of the contemporary sublime: the giant naval boatyard at Faslane marks the work of another force of nature: Mankind. The submarine shed, although adding an attempt at order to the scene, sits subservient to the forces of nature. Yet when considered in context with the power of water and volcanic energy, and a pandemic virus, the uses of nuclear power have a further tension as a new force of nature harnessed to the will of mankind to survive.
