Self-Portrait
I am neither American or Chinese. I am not what our culture thinks a first-generation Chinese-American technical immigrant looks like. I am not the girl my parents thought they would have. And yet, these expectations of 'daughter,' 'Chinese,' and 'American' conflict with one another unable to assimilate my life into the restrictive vocabulary I've been offered. And so I become inscrutable as layer after layer can not reconcile itself.
