Sullivan Freed

Statement

I started painting a little over a year ago. I had been a closeted creative during my 20 year military career, but decided to go buck wild after retirement. I had two years of artist’s block after moving from New Orleans to Portugal. I randomly signed up for an art retreat in France that happened to be run and filled with a bunch of Glaswegian artists and the rest is history. I moved to Glasgow two months after the retreat and have been painting like a fiend ever since.
My submissions for this show are based on my last trip home for French Quarter festival. I work with found and used objects. The paintings are done on used canvases or material from the charity shops. The headdresses are also entirely from charity shop material, with additional found objects thrown in. The first one started with a bunch of faux peonies found in the gutter outside the train station.
