Rebecca Johnstone

Statement

I am a writer, artist and designer with a first class honours degree in Textiles & Fashion Design Management, specialising in print, from Heriot-Watt University (formerly the Scottish College of Textiles).

Living in Lanarkshire, Scotland and influenced by my local surroundings, I interpret the culture of Glasgow, Paisley, the Scottish Highlands (where I grew up), and beyond, to create bold and colourful hand-drawn pattern designs, illustrations and mixed-media original art.

Creating my motifs using a combination of pen, ink, pencil, watercolour and digital mediums, I follow my 'maximalist' instincts to create designs that really pop, often pairing my patterns with photographic imagery, offering a new and unique take on iconic and familiar scenes.

Currently digging in to my textile background and exploring mixed-media approaches, I strive to save and preserve even the tiniest scraps of torn paper and fabric. I love the idea of transforming a 2D image into something other, bringing it to life with layered pattern and textures.

Bespoke commissions welcome.
