Statement

At the tail end of 2023 and into 2024,  I began to explore the human form more confidently with simple mark-making from life studies. I was echoing their spirit and energy, being spontaneous, working quickly, and avoiding the repetition of marks.  The body of work, titled an 'immediate response,' contained many rapid paintings and drawings of a visceral reaction to the subjects, each taking 30 seconds to five minutes to create. Many pieces were rejected, and a few were chosen to be published in my portfolio, which was recently submitted and accepted to study for the Master of Letters in Fine Art Practice Degree at the Glasgow School of Art.  During this time, I will create a body of work that explores the link between the figure, its context and the subconscious prejudice that shapes our opinion of them.  I never make it to sell, but I derive satisfaction and motivation to continue exploring from the feedback I receive.
